Original antique postcard depicting one of the most poignant relics of the Napoleonic era on display at the Château de la Malmaison: the carriage known as L’Opale — the very vehicle that brought Empress Joséphine back to Malmaison following her divorce from Napoleon Bonaparte in December 1809.
The photograph shows the carriage in its museum setting: an elegant four-wheeled coach with ornate black lacquer bodywork, gilded decorative panels, fringed curtains on the coachman’s box, and spoked wheels of unequal size typical of the period. The interior is partially visible through the open door, lined with fine textile upholstery. The carriage is a haunting symbol of Joséphine’s banishment from the imperial household and her quiet final years at Malmaison, where she died in 1814.
The caption reads: «154 — Château de la MALMAISON. L’Opale, voiture qui ramena Joséphine à la Malmaison après le divorce. ND Phot.»
Published by Neurdein Frères (ND Phot.) as No.154. Reverse blank and unused, with a clean divided-back Carte Postale / Correspondance / Adresse layout. Uniform light age toning overall, no foxing or damage. One of the most historically charged items in the entire Malmaison postcard series.
