Hewlett’s Bible – Plates Volume is a rare antique folio published in England circa 1812, printed by T. Davison, Lombard-street, Whitefriars, London. This is the dedicated Plates companion volume to the celebrated biblical commentary edited by John Hewlett, English biblical scholar.
The volume contains a fine collection of copper engravings illustrating scenes from the Old and New Testament, including works after the great masters: Jacob’s Departure into Canaan and Rachel at the Well after Raphael, and Daniel in the Lions’ Den after Le Brun. Also included are two engraved maps — A Map of Palestine or the Holy Land and Map of Judaea — and a Chronological Chart comparing Hebrew and Septuagint chronologies.
Binding: Original half-leather binding with dark brown leather spine and corner pieces, marbled paper boards in a peacock/shell pattern of blue, cream and brown — characteristic of fine English bookbinding of the period. Spine with original gilt labels: Hewlett’s Bible and Plates.
Condition: Good. Binding structurally sound with only minor wear to extremities. Pages and plates with natural age-toning consistent with early 19th-century paper; no major foxing, tears, or losses visible. A presentable and collectible example.
A significant piece for collectors of antique Bibles, biblical cartography, or early 19th-century English book arts.
